HFCL joins IIT Delhi, government-funded project to develop new fiber technology

Delhi-based HFCL has joined a research group led by Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, with funding from the Department of Telecommunications. The project focuses on developing hollow-core fiber (HCF), a new type of optical fiber for future communication networks.

The company has said that Hollow-core fiber is a new kind of optical fiber that sends light through a hollow center instead of solid glass. Its benefits are being seen as important to 6G network and quantum communication, AI data centres and for telecom infrastructure.

“The participation of industry partners such as HFCL through the consortium framework provides valuable perspective on scalability, manufacturability, and deployment considerations,” said Professor Deepak Jain, Principal Investigator, IIT Delhi.

HFCL operates advanced manufacturing facilities in Hyderabad, Goa, Chennai (through its subsidiary HTL) and Manesar for telecom and networking products, and Hosur for defence equipment.
