USDFC to provide insurance for maritime trade through the Gulf

US President Donald Trump said on a social media post, that he has ordered the US Development Finance Corporation (USDFC) to provide, at a reasonable price, political risk insurance and guarantees for the “Financial Security of ALL Maritime Trade, especially Energy, traveling through the Gulf”.

“If necessary, the United States Navy will begin escorting tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, as soon as possible,” he added.

The USDFC has said that it is ready to mobilise its Political Risk Insurance and Guaranty products to stabilise international commerce and support American and allied businesses operating in the Middle East during this period of conflict with the Iranian regime. It aims to offer support to commercial shipping charterers, shipowners, and key maritime insurance providers to minimise market disruptions and help ensure the free flow of goods and capital.

“DFC’s involvement reflects the broader strategy of aligning American commercial tools with the President’s foreign policy—ensuring that economic engagement reinforces peace, stability, and American strategic interests across the region,” the company has said.

The USDFC, established in 2019 under Trump, is the international investment arm of the US government. It partners with the private sector to advance US foreign policy and strengthen national security by mobilising private capital around the world. The development financial institution invests across sectors including critical minerals, modern infrastructure, and advanced technology — “fostering economic development, supporting US interests, and delivering returns to American taxpayers”.icon
